Heat Pump Maintenance in Bristol

Heat pumps need little looking after, but a few habits and a yearly professional check keep them efficient for 15–20 years. This page covers both, and helps you decide whether a maintenance plan is worth paying for.

An engineer measuring a radiator during a heating system check
  • Little and often

clearing leaves, glancing at the pressure gauge and noting error codes takes minutes a month.

  • One professional visit a year

an annual service is what most warranties require and what keeps efficiency on track.

  • Plans are optional

a maintenance plan spreads the cost and may add priority repairs; paying per visit can be cheaper. It depends on you.

What you can do yourself

  1. Keep the outdoor unit breathing

Clear leaves, especially in autumn on Bristol's tree-lined streets, and brush off snow. Keep plants and stored items at least 30 cm away. Switch off at the isolator before touching anything close to the fan.

  2. Check the pressure gauge

Every month or two, look at the system pressure near the cylinder. Note the normal reading from your handover; if it drops noticeably, call an engineer.

  3. Watch the controller

Note any error codes and when they appear. Patterns help an engineer diagnose quickly.

  4. Run it steadily

Leave the heating at a consistent temperature. Repeatedly switching it off and on makes it work harder and less efficiently.

  5. Mind the hot water

If hot water starts taking longer to reheat, it may be scale from Bristol's hard water on the cylinder coil. Mention it at the next service.

What needs an engineer

  • an annual service: coil, filter, pressures, cylinder safety valves, controls
  • anything inside the outdoor unit or controller
  • refrigerant work, which legally requires F-Gas certification
  • topping up or bleeding a system that keeps losing pressure

Our servicing page lists what a proper annual service covers.

Maintenance plans: are they worth it?

Many installers offer a maintenance plan: a monthly or annual fee that covers the yearly service, and sometimes discounted or priority repairs. Whether it suits you depends on how you weigh cost against convenience.

Pay per serviceMaintenance plan
Typical cost£120–£250 per serviceOften £150–£350 a year
RepairsPaid when neededSometimes discounted or included up to a limit
PriorityBooked like any customerSometimes faster attendance, if written into the plan
Best forNewer systems under warranty, confident ownersLandlords, older systems, people who want predictable costs

Read the terms carefully. Check exactly what's covered, any call-out limits, whether parts are included, and how quickly someone must attend. A plan is only as good as what it promises in writing.

Bristol conditions that affect maintenance

  • Hard water. Bristol Water's supply is moderately hard to very hard. Scale on the cylinder coil is the most common long-term issue.
  • Damp winters. Frequent defrost cycles are normal, but the drain beneath the unit must stay clear so meltwater doesn't pool.
  • Leaves. Leafy areas such as Redland, Westbury-on-Trym and Sneyd Park mean autumn debris builds up on outdoor units.
  • Steep gardens. Units on sloping or terraced plots need an engineer who can reach them safely, which can affect visit time.

Maintenance questions

How long does a heat pump last with good maintenance?

Typically 15–20 years, and sometimes longer. Regular servicing and a clean outdoor unit help it reach the upper end.

Do I need a maintenance plan to keep my warranty?

No. Warranties usually require an annual service by a qualified engineer, not a plan. Paying per service meets that requirement if you keep the records.

What does a heat pump maintenance plan cost?

Plans commonly cost around £150–£350 a year, depending on what's included. Compare that with paying £120–£250 for a single annual service.

Is maintenance different from servicing?

Servicing is the yearly professional check. Maintenance is the broader job of keeping the system healthy, including what you do yourself between services.

Can I wash the outdoor unit?

Gently rinsing loose dirt off the outside of the coil with a hose on low pressure is fine with the unit switched off. Never use a pressure washer, and don't bend the fins.
